Delta to begin Non Stop Flights to Sydney

Delta Air Lines will begin nonstop service between Los Angeles International Airport and Sydney, starting in July.

The start of Sydney flights—which may prompt a fare war on the popular U.S.-Australia route next year—is part of a broader move by Atlanta-based Delta to expand international operations at LAX, airline officials said.

In addition to Sydney, Delta will begin nonstop service between LAX and Sao Paulo, Brazil, beginning May 21. The new Sao Paulo service would complement the three weekly nonstop flights currently flown by Korean Air, an airline alliance partner.

Delta said it also would increase nonstop service from LAX to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport from seven departures a day to eight to improve connection times for travelers from the Northeast flying to Sydney.

Best Airlines for Traveling with Pets

Here are some things you should know about flying with your pets on your favorite airlines.
Of course, this is an abbreviated version of most airlines rules, but feel free to contact me for more information anytime.

Make sure your pet is older than 8 weeks old.

Your pet has to be healthy, which means no diseases, health problems or anything that may be
dangerous to other animals.

Make sure you always bring the necessary paperwork with you to go alongside with your pet.

Make sure your crate is large enough for your animal and always put your name and contact
information on it.

American Airlines: Pets are accepted in the cabin and do count as checked baggage, check for latest checked baggage fees. Cats and Dogs are the only animals allowed.

Delta Airlines: Delta allows cabin pets as well as cargo. They allow Dogs, Cats, Birds, hamsters,
frogs and others (check for allowed pets with your travel agent or the airlines before traveling)
keep in mind that size restrictions of animals may apply. If you do bring your pet on board , make sure they are able to fit under your seat.

Northwest Airlines: You are able to bring pets onboard but be advised that pets are only allowed on some flights. You cannot take them in the cabin on flights to Hawaii and most International
flights, usually due to quarantine laws. Northwest has received some of the best reviews in handling of pets.

United Airlines: United allows pets in the cabin as well as in the cargo area. Check with the airline for travel dates as United may refuse in cabin pets during certain months. And always call ahead to make sure United accepts your breed of pet.

There are more airlines, and in the future I will be able to post it here on my blog. This is just
a brief summary. And last but not least Jet Blue is offering a pet frequent flier program, where you and your pet can earn miles.

And as an past American Airlines employee and a specialist with traveling with pets I welcome
any questions and would be happy to arrange a pet friendly flight and/or vacation for you.

AA Launches Priority Access

American Airlines (AA) is working to enhance the customer’s travel experience with the launch of PriorityAAccess privileges. PriorityAAccess is designed to maximize time and minimize hassles for travelers while at the airport by offering dedicated check-in and security screening lanes, as well as exclusive boarding lanes at the gate to AAdvantage elite and premium class travelers. The program eases check in, security and boarding for AAdvantage Elite Status Members, First and Business Class Travelers, AAirpass Customers, and passengers traveling on Full-Fare Economy Class Tickets.

AA said the new program is one of many customer experience initiatives aimed at differentiating the travel experience for its business travelers. After testing the concept at Los Angeles International Airport and receiving positive customer reviews, American is implementing the program beginning September 30. The full range of PriorityAAccess privileges will be available throughout the majority of American’s network where airport regulations do not restrict the program. The rollout is expected to be completed the end of October.
New features for PriorityAAccess customers include a dedicated check-in area at the ticket counter with distinctive signage clearly identifying PriorityAAccess lines. In addition, “PriorityAAccess” will be printed on boarding passes, designating travelers as American’s top customers. American will offer PriorityAAccess check-in areas at all of the airports it serves worldwide.

Where permitted by airport policy and government security regulations, American will offer exclusive PriorityAAccess security screening lanes. Like the dedicated check-in lines, PriorityAAccess screening lanes will be clearly marked with special signage. Currently, American plans to offer PriorityAAccess screening lanes in its 10 largest airports, as well as in other airports where permitted by the TSA. The airports that will have exclusive PriorityAAccess security screen lanes are: Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago O’Hare, Miami, Los Angeles, New York JFK and La Guardia, St. Louis, San Francisco, Boston and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

AA To Try Wi-Fi Onboard Certain Flights

American Airlines (AA) is now offering Wi-Fi capabilities to satisfy all Internet addicts and aid all busy business travelers while flying. With Aircell's Internet Broadband Service, Gogo, aboard its transcon fleet of 767-200 aircraft, AA is the first U.S. airline to offer its passengers complete Internet capabilities. The new service is included on routes from New York to San Francisco, Los Angeles and Miami.
Gogo will be available in all classes for $12.95, providing full Internet access to laptops, smartphones and PDAs, allowing users to surf the Web, send e-mails and IMs, and even use VPN access to corporate networks.
The technology from Aircell is subject to strict requirements set forth by the Federal Aviation Administration through an exclusive license from the Federal Communications Commission. Both agencies oversee the use of broadband and wireless signals by aircraft flying over the continental United States.
The new technology will be trialed on AA's 15 Boeing 767-200 flights for a period of three-to-six months.

Westin & United in Bed Together

Later this month, all first and business class customers flying United's p.s. service will relax with the Westin Heavenly Bed products and signature amenities. The partnership between Westin Hotels & Resorts and United Airlines marks the first time that hotel-branded bedding and amenities have taken to the sky on a U.S. airline. United's first and business class p.s. service between New York and California also includes White Tea scented towelettes and mints, custom video and music on United's personal media players, and a specialty cocktail that will be unveiled each season.

Last month, the companies also unveiled Westin Renewal Lounges inside Red Carpet Clubs in New York (JFK), Los Angeles and San Francisco. The San Francisco lounge is equipped with a revolutionary blue-light ActiViva Lamp that provides phototherapy, which makes people feel more alert and energized. While much of the furniture found in the Westin Renewal Lounges mirrors the offerings at Westin properties, the company's designers also created two pieces of custom furniture specifically for the United lounges - an upholstered ottoman with a built-in table and a day bed for resting.

Top Ten Reasons To Use A Travel Agent

Here is an article I read that I just had to Post:

Top 10 Reasons to Use a Travel Agent:

1 You've Googled "Mexico Vacation", and come up with 17.8 million responses. Need a little help editing those choices?

2 Remember when you used that obscure website to book your hotel, and when you got there you spent your beach vacation overlooking a parking lot?

3 How many hours were you on hold with the airline when your flight was cancelled because of a snowstorm?

4 Did you really mean to spend your honeymoon at that resort whose one tiny pool was filled all day with 12 screaming children?

5 Who knew that when you booked that "Villa" in Tuscany, it would be a small room with a kitchenette and no air conditioning? Funny, it looked much better on your computer screen.

6 No one explained to you that in July, it's winter time in Rio, and so you showed up there with nothing but five hawaiian shirts and three pairs of swimming trunks.

7 How about the time you really needed a restful vacation, and you ended up in New Orleans during Mardi Gras and someone threw up on your shoes?

8 Yes, I guess that hotel must have used a telephoto lens when they took a picture of those guest rooms that you saw on their website.

9 I suppose contacting the Attorney General to resolve the fact that the internet site has billed your credit card three times instead of once is the only route to take at this point.

10 It was definitely odd that there were no cab drivers at the airport at 3:00 am in the morning when you finally landed in Costa Rica, but booking a transfer to your very remote hotel would have been a good thing to remember when you purchased your airline ticket and hotel online.

Many Thanks to Ruthanne Terrero for this brilliant article.

JetBlue Goes Eco But For A Price

In a move that will make some happy and some very upset JetBlue is now even charging for Pillows and Blankets. Thank You to Modern Agent for this following article:

JetBlue Airways is charging for pillow and blanket kits, rationalizing it as an eco-friendly, high-altitude kit for health-conscious travelers. It is selling what it calls "The World's Cleanest" travel pillow and blanket kit in partnership with CleanBrands LLC. Customers on JetBlue flights longer than two hours may purchase the $7 eco-friendly pillow and blanket, which includes a coupon for $5 off the future purchase of any item at Bed, Bath & Beyond. The pillow uses a fabric that blocks all micro-toxins larger than one micron in size, such as dust mites, mold spores, pollen and pet dander. The take-home travel kit includes a 10" x 12" size pillow, as well as a 39" x 51" fleece blanket. Both items come with a carrying case for use on future trips. Delta Lauches New Structure for Award Travel

Delta Air Lines in September will launch a new SkyMiles Award Travel structure to provide SkyMiles members greater flexibility and more options when redeeming miles, including the ability to again book the last seat on a flight using miles and three redemption tiers for award travel within the continental United States, Alaska and Canada to destinations worldwide.

Tiers will start at 25,000, 40,000 and 60,000 miles round-trip rather than the two current award levels starting at 25,000 and 50,000 miles for travel within continental United States, Alaska and Canada. Customers will have access to multiple Award Travel options including last- seat Award availability again and continue to be able to combine Economy, First and Business cabins, and dates at various mileage levels. "These changes will allow our members to better use their miles when they want, where they want and how they want -- with no blackout dates and the ability again to book the last seat on the plane," said Jeff Robertson, managing director of Delta's SkyMiles program. For complete details visit the "Program Updates" section of www.delta.com/skymiles.

Northwest Airlines to Add Fuel Surcharge

its roundtrip domestic routes.

The surcharge will apply to travel to about 7,000 city pairs, matching surcharges added by

competitors in those markets. The fuel surcharge will cover less than two-thirds of the

airlines city pairs but, if it is enacted, it will be the largest fare increase since United Airlines

$70 base fare hike in April.

Delta Airlines Increases 2nd Bag Fees

Delta Air Lines is raising the fee for checking a second and third bag on domestic flights for all tickets purchased on or after August 5. The airline said it is raising the charge to offset to high fuel prices.

The charge for checking a second bag will increase from $25 to $50, and the fee for checking a third bag will increase from $80 to $125. First Class, BusinessElite and Medallion passengers will not be affected and will be able to check up to three bags for no charge. Customers on international flights still do not have to pay a charge for any checked luggage.

Delta accepts up to 10 checked bags on Delta mainline flights and four checked bags on Delta Connection carriers.

Hawaiian Joins the Charge for 1st Bag Club

Hawaiian Airlines has announced that it will begin charging $15 for a first checked bag on flights between the US mainland and Hawaii. The carrier also adjusted its frequent flier program by increasing the mileage needed to redeem award tickets.

The $15 baggage feel will be added on tickets purchased after Aug. 1, 2008 for travel commencing on or after Oct. 1, 2008.

The airline will not charge for the first piece of checked luggage on inter-island flights, though it does currently charge $17 for a second bag on inter-island flights, and $25 on mainland flights.
The new minimum mileage requirements for reward travel redemption will be 15,000 (up from 10,000) for travel starting Sept. 1, 2008. The minimum for trans-Pacific flights will increase from 35,000 to 40,000 miles.

According to Hawaiian it last changed its minimum mileage requirements 14 years ago.

Midwest Airlines Cuts Number of Flights

First Midwest Airlines reduced its staff, now it is cutting its scheduled number of flights, the Associated Press reports. Fuel costs are, once again, the primary factor as the Milwaukee-based airline plans to eliminate flights to leisure destinations while it holds on to departures to business destinations.

The series of changes will reduce the airline's service to levels that existed before recession and the 9/11 terrorist attacks.General flights to San Diego, as well as Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers in Florida, will be removed, leaving Tampa as the only Florida city with year-round service from Midwest. Midwest Connect service to Baltimore; Hartford, CT; Louisville, KY.; Raleigh/Durham, N.C.; and St. Louis will be cut as well. Meanwhile, nonstop flights to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle will also be changed, as the flights will now stop in Kansas City first.

All departures to Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C., will remain unaffected.
Midwest Airlines said it will try hard to rebook passengers who bought tickets for flights that are canceled, and will refund passengers whose flights cannot be rebooked.

VEGAS SHOW UPDATE

Whether you are a little bit country or a little bit rock and roll, there is a Las Vegas headliner that’s perfect for you.

Case in point: Starting September 9, 1970s icons Donny and Marie are coming back with an all new variety show at the Flamingo.

The 90-minute show will feature their biggest hits, as well as multimedia effects and a dance team. It’s the first time in nearly 30 years that this duo is pairing up for an extended run in Las Vegas, and the early buzz on the show is highly positive.

Another show getting strong pre-opening buzz is CRISS ANGEL Believe. The new Cirque du Soleil show opens for previews on September 1 at Luxor Las Vegas and takes a decidedly gothic approach to its look and feel. What we like about the Cirque approach is that every new show features a distinct new look and feel.

With LOVE at Mirage, they took on the the Beatles. Now, they are taking on magic and illusion with the star of A&E's Mindfreak.

Famed Las Vegas headliner Danny Gans is also bolting Mirage for the soon-to-debut Encore. It’s expected that he will take up residence there in early 2009. It’s a homecoming of sorts for Gans, who has been performing at Mirage since 2000 when then owner Steve Wynn built him a theater there.

Now, Wynn has lured him to his newest casino resort, Encore, which is expected to open later this year. More information on the show and ticket availability is forthcoming.

Though it’s been playing for several months already, Bette Midler is performing at Caesars Palace in The Showgirl Must Go On. The show is locked in for at least 200 shows over two years and ends with her blockbuster hit "Wind Beneath My Wings."

AA ADDS MORE FLIGHTS TO ST MAARTEN

With the anticipated suspension of a host of Caribbean flights by American Airlines come September, news of additional flights to any Caribbean destination is celebrated these days. And this is why it didn’t take St. Maarten’s Commissioner of Tourism Roy Marlin long to publicly praise American Airlines on their announcement to add a second Miami-St. Maarten flight beginning in November.

The new American Airlines flight is scheduled to leave Miami International Airport at 5:15 p.m. arriving in St. Maarten at 9:10 p.m. The aircraft will depart the next morning at 9:10 a.m., arriving in Miami at 11:30 a.m.

In addition, the commissioner praised American for its decision to add a second New York-St. Maarten flight for the 2008-2009 tourism season. That flight, originating from JFK International Airport, will commence December 18 and is scheduled to run two times per week. It will increase to five times per week on January 6, 2009 for the remainder of the peak tourism season.

“On behalf of The Island Territory of St. Maarten, I am extremely grateful to American Airlines for their decision to increase capacity to our destination,” said Marlin in a written release. “Their judgment only confirms the fact that, in light of all the cutbacks taking place in the airline industry today, St. Maarten has an extremely viable and thriving tourism product.”

GO! AIRLINES TO CHARGE FOR 1ST BAG

The bag fee will start on Aug. 10, 2008. The fee will not be charged to passengers who bought tickets before July 10.
The carrier also said it is reducing fees for second checked bags, from $25 to $17 because of the new fee.

Carnival Seaside Theatre to be added to more ships

Five Carnival ships currently house the line's popular Seaside Theatre—jumbo LED screens that play movies and other video. Carnival is now introducing the concept to five more ships over the next year.

The first Seaside Theatre debuted in 2005 on Carnival Liberty and on all new builds thereafter, including Carnival Splendor, which just debuted last week in Europe. Carnival Dream, debuting in 2009, will be built with a Seaside Theatre; Carnival Destiny and Carnival Triumph will be refitted with theatres during scheduled drydocks later this year; and Carnival Conquest and Carnival Glory are set to receive screens next year.

Ruben Rodriguez, Carnival's executive vice president of marketing and guest experience, called the Seaside Theatre concept a great outdoor diversion. The 270-square-foot screens use the same technology as the jumbo screens in New York's Times Square and at stadiums across the country.

Northwest Follows with 1st Bag Charge

Northwest Adds Bag/Ticket Fees, Cuts 2,500 Jobs
July 10, 2008
By: George Dooley
TravelAgentCentral

The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) has advised members that Northwest Airlines will charge for the first checked bag. The move is effective for domestic tickets booked on or after July 10 for travel on or after August 28. Northwest will charge $15 each way ($30 roundtrip) for the first checked bag. The second bag fee is $25 each way. The fee for three or more bags is $100 per bag each way.

Northwest's new fee applies to customers traveling within the U.S and to/from Canada. Full-fare coach passengers and frequent flier elites are exempt from the policy. Northwest's first bag fee matches the fees charged by American Airlines, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways, ASTA noted.

Northwest also upped charges for nonrefundable ticket changes. Effective July 9, the fee for domestic non-refundable ticket changes will increase from $100 to $150. International ticket change fees will increase by an additional $50 to $150 per ticket, depending on class of service and other restrictions.

Effective for tickets issued on or after September 15, Northwest will charge $25 for domestic, $50 for transatlantic and $100 for transpacific WorldPerks Award tickets issued in North America.

ASTA advised agents to disclose to customers at the time of booking that fees may apply when checking bags. In addition, agents should include a disclosure notice on customer itineraries and invoices. To see a summary of airline checked bag fees, as well as a sample disclosure notice, read ASTA's Airline Checked Baggage Policy Chart.

In other NWA news, the airline announced that it will cut 2,500 jobs from its workforces, a decrease of about 8.3 percent. The cuts, according to airline spokesmen, are in response to soaring oil costs and will include front-line and management workers.

Tip of the Day!!! Credit Card Payments

Tip of the day!!!

For those of us who might be resistant at times to pay with a credit card, just a little hint.
We as a travel professional get paid quicker with a personal check , but I would still advise
to pay by credit card for you own protection. You can always write a check to the credit card company the same day you pay with your credit card to avoid interest.

This protects you, as a consumer. With bankrupcy of airlines and tour companies lately, why not protect yourself and have a faster way to recoup your investment. Of course, another bit of advise would be to purchase travel insurance, especially if purchasing a vacation package or tour.
Midwest 'racing' to avoid bankruptcy filing

Pressure appears to be mounting on Midwest Airlines. The Wall Street Journal says the company "is racing to craft a restructuring plan to avoid a bankruptcy-court filing." Midwest has already said it will ground 12 of its 37 jets, retiring its fuel-guzzling MD-80 aircraft. Midwest CEO Timothy Hoeksema also has warned of layoffs and has called on the many airline's remaining frontline workers to take pay cuts of up to 65%, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Hoeksema's call seems to have some urgency, according to the Journal. He calls the airline's situation "critical" and warns the airline's restructuring plan must be put into action within 30 days "to make sure we have the cash level necessary to operate."

The Journal writes "Hoeksema said TPG (Capital) has agreed to provide support in the interim, but won't invest in a restructuring plan unless Midwest's vendors, business partners and employees also agree to sacrifices." TPG became Midwest's majority owner earlier this year (53%) after outbidding AirTran, which was in the midst of a hostile-takeover attempt of Midwest. Northwest signed on as a passive investor (47% stake) as part of that bid. A Northwest spokeswoman would only tell the Journal that "as a passive investor, we are assessing the situation."

Meanwhile, the Journal Sentinel writes some pilots union officials have received reports that Midwest executives may also have "plans to phase out five of its Boeing 717s. Combined with the elimination of the MD-80 jets, those additional aircraft cuts would reduce the airline's fleet by about half." Midwest spokesman Michael Brophy says the company has not made a final decision on how many jets it will cut.

"We have been transparent in communicating to our employees that there are sure to be reductions in work force and benefits through most parts of the organization, but that they will be fair and equitable," Brophy says in a statement quoted by the Journal Sentinel. "Obviously, Chapter 11 is not our most desirable destination. That's why we're working on this restructuring plan, so we can avoid that scenario."

Meanwhile, the airline's unions have so far balked at the proposed pay cuts, which would top out at around 65% for pilots and 56% for flights attendants, according to the WISN TV of Milwaukee. Jay Schnedorf, head of the Midwest pilots union, tells the Journal Sentinel that one wage-cut scenario would drop some pilots' pay from around $120,000 to a figure into the low-$30,000 range. "It's a catastrophic impact on the families," he tells the paper. Dory Klein of Midwest's flight attendants union adds: "We've sacrificed so much. We really don't have much more to give."

The Journal Sentinel goes on to suggest that Midwest's latest flight cuts could give a new opening for AirTran in Milwaukee. Without its MD-80 jets, Midwest will no longer be able to fly to some of its West Coast destinations with its remaining Boeing 717s. At least one industry consultant -- Vaughn Cordle of Airline Forecasts –- says he thinks its possible outcome for Midwest is that its reduced operation could simply be folded into that of passive investor Northwest. "It appears to me that the Midwest fleet is no longer needed," Cordle says to the Journal Sentinel. But officials at Delta, which would take over NWA's 47% share in Midwest if the proposed Delta-NWA merger goes forward, say they intend to keep Midwest flying as a standalone carrier.
